6hex
Hex editor with a built-in monitor for 6502/6510, 68000 and x86. Finds graphics in binaries, rips embedded files, and can attach to a running VICE, FS-UAE or DOSBox so the document is the machine's live memory.
| Linux x64 | 6hex-2026.11.06-linux-x64.tar.gz | 40 MB |
| Windows x64 | 6hex-2026.11.06-win-x64.zip | 42 MB |
- Linux:
tar xzf 6hex-*-linux-x64.tar.gz, then./6hex file.bin. Needs X11 and fontconfig. - Windows: unzip and run
6hex.exe. The binary is unsigned, so SmartScreen may warn.

Changed bytes are highlighted. The editor, Visualizer and Monitor share one document, so an edit in any of them shows in the others.
Visualizer

Modes: 1bpp linear, 8×8 charset tiles, planar 1 to 6 bitplanes, C64 sprites, C64 multicolour and hi-res bitmap, and a structure map coloured by code, data and strings. It renders live as you edit. Click a pixel to jump to its byte.
Monitor

VICE-dialect commands against the file as a memory image: m d a h f c t, plus symbols, amap for a code and data map, xref, strings, and listing and map export. Profiles for C64 PRG, raw and cartridge, DOS COM and MZ EXE, and Amiga hunk. It decodes Amiga copper lists and custom-register writes, and DOS INT calls.
Live target
attach vice C64: VICE binary monitor
attach amiga Amiga: FS-UAE control socket
attach dosbox DOS: DOSBox control server
The buffer becomes the machine's RAM. d, the Visualizer and the Ripping menu then work on what is running, and typing a byte pokes it (live ro to only look). Registers, stepping, breakpoints and watchpoints work where the emulator's link supports them. targets lists what each one can do.
Ripping and crunchers
The Ripping menu walks a binary for MOD, SID, IFF, hunk and MZ by signature, and for C64 charsets, sprites, Koala pictures and Amiga planar graphics by heuristic. Heuristic hits are candidates to check in the Visualizer.
Select bytes and use Selection > Cruncher to identify or depack in place, as one undo step: PowerPacker, StoneCracker, Imploder, CrunchMania, Exomizer, PuCrunch, ZX0, gzip and others.
